Reflection
We are just over a month from the end of the school, I can say that I’ve stepped out of my box and tried new things. Learning from my students and mistakes that help me to think and plan goals for the future. I’m still currently re-energized for teaching next year. I’m confident in my decision to take my classroom back and be slightly selfish to teach without residents next school year. Some of the goals that I’d like to maintain for next year are completing the Yale Initiative, tying more of the societal impacts from science and vice versa into my units, collaborating with others around the network to examine student work and working with teachers in my building to really focus on building a K-8 science program through the MSI School Partners Program.
Next year, I’m not anticipating a lot of change. I have a hunch that the change that was to happen this year, with our schedule splitting into a “diad” and “triad” could possible still happen. There is also a chance that as a network we’ll be adopting a new curriculum. I’ll be piloting it the last couple weeks to provide feedback but am unsure how this will affect the development of my units I’ve already done. I would like to continue embedding the relationship between society and science into my units. Since my Imagine It project, I’ve incorporate more social repercussions and change due to science and it’s been extremely engaging to students, I’d like to continue the work.
My very daunting goal for my PLN is to create a Live Binder of all my resources I use. I often “beg, borrow, and steal” from other educators who put their work out there to the public, that I should be one of those teachers as well. I’d also like to continue working on my website that was developed for Urban STEM but use it as a blog. I’ve been approached by many of the teachers who walk into my world wondering if I have one, so why not try it. I also want my students to blog and tweet more regularly, sharing their experiences with others. I feel that is often a voice, as teachers, that we don’t hear from outside of our classroom walls.
With teaching by myself next year, I’ll feel more open to try new things that build on what I’ve done from the past. I think that there’s always been a pressure to teach MBI in our network, especially because I was training new teachers for the network. Now, with complete the Yale Initiative and thinking about the teaching in a new and different way, I’ll feel less pressure to teach in one style. I don’t foresee having a challenge with abandoning some of my past.
